Finding a Cat Breed That Works for You

Jay Schindler asked:

If dog is man's best friend, then cats are a man's caprice.

Aside from being expensive, purebred cats are difficult to care for as they require their owner's love and attention. Cats are like babies, because they need to be fed, sometimes bathed, combed, played with and cared for.

Cats are best bought from responsible cat breeders. Hobbyists choose to own purebred cats because their temperaments are more predictable than cats with unknown pedigrees.

If you are getting a cat from a cat breeder, ask him about the number of cat breeds that he has so you can choose from them. Also, ask him how many years he has been breeding cats and whether he can give you a health guarantee and complete papers for the cat.

Top cat breeds

If you want to show off your cat then it is best to choose from among the top five cat breeds throughout the world.

1. Persian-Persian cats are called Persian for their country of origin. Persians have a long coat, sweet personality and have the ability to blend into the household. These are the qualities that made Persians one of the top choices of cat lovers. However, its long coat requires daily combing to avoid tangles.

2. Maine Coon-These are long-haired cats with good mouse hunting skills. These cats are good companions for children.

3. Exotic-This breed can offer you the better of two worlds. The Exotic cat has the look of a Persian cat, but it has short hair, making it easy to groom. They look like teddy bears with their thick and short coats. These cats are sweet and good companions like the Persians.

4. Siamese-Siamese cats originally came from Siam or Thailand. This cat possesses an aristocratic head, looks almost like a deer because of it's stiff ears, and has a short coat.  Siamese cats have long bodies, long legs and long necks.

5. Abyssinian-These cats are very elegant-looking, much like the cats portrayed in Egyptian sculptures. Abyssinia is the former name of Ethiopia. However, Abyssinian cats did not originate in Ethiopia. They got the name because the first cats of Abyssinian breed, which were exhibited in England, were from Abyssinia.

No matter what your choice of a cat breed is, make sure that your cat is healthy and that it has already been weaned. The ideal age to get a kitten is about 14 weeks, when their immune systems are already developed.

How Cats Behave

Marvin Harrison asked:

Most cats behave in the same way, and have similar characteristics. For example, they all have feline mannerisms, like their sense of balance, their ability to jump, and their uncanny resemblance to predators in the wild. Other typical cat behavior includes purring, sleeping, and climbing. Below are some of the most common cat behaviors and what they mean.

Purring

Many people assume that a purring cat is content and happy. That's usually true, but there are other times when a cat will purr.

Kittens an their mothers will purr while nursing. In the same vein, a typical cat will purr when it is being petted or when it is in familiar, safe and comfortable surroundings.

However, purring may also be a defense mechanism for a sick, injured, or stressed out cat. Purring is a way for a cat to calm and soothe itself. Some people compare it to a person smiling nervously or rocking to soothe themselves.

Sleeping

The typical cat also likes to sleep, and can sleep for as many as sixteen hours a day. Through scanning their brain waves and observing their movements while asleep, scientists have also determined that cats do dream. Sleep can also be used to determin how healthy a cat is. Although cats don't show illness very well, a change in their sleep habits may be a sign of sickness, and should be a clue that they need to see a veterinarian.

Climbing

The typical cat loves to climb and perch on high places. Cats may feel safer and less vulnerable higher up, and it gives them a strategic advantage. They can view what's going on around them, and yet be hidden from view below. This behavior is a throwback to when the cat was primarily a predator, hunting small animals below. Cats may also appreciate that warmer air rises, so the higher they are, the more comfortable they are. You may also see cats fight for high perches, since this behavior may indicate social status -- a cat may choose the highest point to prove its dominant status in a household.

Play

Cats love to play and pounce. This, again, is probably indicative of their stalking heritage in the wild. One difference in cat toys versus the wild, however, is the presence of catnip. Many toys these days contain catnip, and you can also grow it in containers. A typical cat will munch fresh or dried catnip and roll and rub their heads in it, or claw at a toy and rub it around. When a cat smells catnip, it can become a crazed animal that runs, spins, and plays before regaining its calm. The reaction doesn't last long, but it is intense and very fun to watch.

Most cats have different personalities and temperaments because of their breeds or their environements. However, all cats share some common behaviors and actions. Purring, sleep, climbing and play are all part of what makes up a typical cat. More about cat behaviour at http://cat-pets-dissected.info

A Look At Cat Breeds

John Pawlett asked:

Over the last thousands of years, cats have pretty much handled their breeding themselves. In the beginning, they were used for one purpose - hunting and killing rodents. As the years progressed, we began to breed cats more to our liking. Now days, there are several different breeds of cats - which you can tell if you look closely.

These days there are over 70 distinct cat breeds, which are recognized through cat registries. There are several registries that will recognize around 40 breeds or so, as they exclude the more domestic breeds such as tigers. There are also many variations as well, including wild cats that have longer hair.

There are some cat breeds who have roots going back quite a bit in history. Some Japanese breeds, such as the Japanese Bobtail, can be traced back more than 1,000 years in history. These cats were very common and well known throughout Medieval Japan. Now days though, they are all but a myth throughout Japan and the entire world.

The more common cat breeds that are found in North America include the alley cat, long haired cat, and Persian cat. Siamese cats are also common, although they are well known to be destructive and to have a foul temper. Persian cats are very popular, proving to be loving companions. Persian cats can be very expense, depending on where you get it and what type of Persian cat it is.

Alley cats are the most common in North America. There are actually several different breeds, although most of us just refer to them as alley cats. They make good pets, although there are literally thousands of them in existence. Cats are known to breed more than any other pet, and they will continue to breed until they are stopped. Alley cats are among the most bred, as there are hundreds of thousands of cats that are homeless - and have nothing to do but breed.

The look of the cat is the easiest way to tell what breed he or she may be. Some people choose to go by color, although color isnt as easy to identify. Different breeds of cats have different looks, such as the Siamese and Persian cats. Siamese cats are almost always black, and easy to identify by their color and their eyes. Persian cats on the other hand, are easily identified by their body type and their hair.

Over the years, there has been quite a few breeds come along. Cats were one of the first pets, and easily one of the most popular. Millions of people around the world own cats, with many people preferring a cat over any other pet - including dogs. No matter breed of cat you get - youre sure to get a pet who make for a great companion for years and years to come.

Joseph Sabol asked:

When you decide to get a cat for a pet, then there will surely be a number of things that you will have to consider. One of these pertains to cat breeds. This is because there are various cat breeds in the market, and choosing amongst the many choices can be confusing altogether. Thus, it would be better do some research on the different cat breeds so that you can choose the best one for your family. This is because cat breeds do differ in terms of shapes, sizes, and demeanor.

One of the popular breeds is the Abyssinian, also known as the Aby cat. If you want to have a playful cat, then you should consider this breed because the Aby cat is very energetic and has quite the personality. The great thing about this cat is that it is also very loyal to its owner and it is also very attentive.

Another popular breed is the Balinese cat. Back in the day, the Balinese is known as the Longhaired Siamese cat simply because the markings on Balinese cats are quite the same as that of the Siamese breed. The only difference is that the tail of the Balinese is actually more plumed in appearance. If you want a cat that is particularly attentive to you, then you should consider getting the Balinese because it does not feel any inhibition about giving attention to its owner. This is because the Balinese also enjoys having the attention of its owner. And since this cat is particularly energetic, make sure to leave it with a chew toy or a plaything when you go off to work. This way, your cat will be able to keep himself entertained.

The Manx is another breed that deserves mention. In appearance, you will definitely say that the Manx is just like any other cat. However, do not be surprised to see a Manx that does not have any tail. Because of certain mutations in this breed's spine, most Manx cats have very short tails, and some do not have any tail at all. Moreover, if you want to get a cat that you and your family can play fetch with, then the Manx is definitely the breed to get.

These are just some of the top cat breeds that dominate families today. If you are still not too sure which breed to go with, you can ask the help of your vet. This way, your very can help you decide which breed is the best for your family.

Oriental Longhair Cat

Omer Ashraf asked:

Oriental Longhair is a long and slender cat quite similar to the Siamese in its body structure. It is also known as British Angora. First recognition of this feline was in the late nineteenth century when it was found to be distinct from the Persian in its coat and physique. This recognition did not last long and it was only in the nineteen sixties that breeders in United Kingdom started developing this cat in earnest. It was named British Angora to distinguish it from Turkish Angora, a separate breed, and it was only recently, in 2002, that British cat fancies named it as the Oriental Longhair.

A lithe and tubular body is the hallmark of this svelte but muscular cat. Coat is silky and long though single layered. It occurs in a variety of colors and patterns including apricot, blue, black, chocolate, cinnamon, fawn, lilac, red, tipped and tabby. Head is wedge shaped and the almond shaped eyes are usually green to blue in coloration. Odd-eyed cats are often seen as well. Ears are large and pointed. Legs are long and so is the bushy tail.

Though Oriental Longhairs are generally quite healthy there have been cases of liver and heart disorders in them. These include hepatic amyloidosis and dilated cardiomyopathy in some lines. There is also a somewhat increased incidence of dental disorders including plaque buildup and gum inflammation. On the whole though these elegant cats are healthy and live for over fifteen years in an indoor environment.

Intelligent and playful by nature, Oriental Longhairs are very active cats. They can be mischievous and demanding at times and are quite inquisitive. Like their relative Siamese cats, the British Angoras are very vocal and expressive. Their fondness for high places is also famous. Even with their active lifestyles these felines take time to develop close attachments to their humans whom they will follow around everywhere.

Pets: an in Depth Look at Siamese Cats

posted by Abby in January 20th, 2009

Nicholas Tan asked:

The exotic and somewhat mysterious Siamese cat hails from the country of Thailand. They had always been a popular breed of cats, some even residing in royal palaces. Siamese cats, in the past, were trusted to protect royal palaces and monasteries from evil spirits. These cats were also thought of as bringing good fortune to their owners as well.

During the year of 1884, the very first Siamese cats began to make their way to England, when they were given as gifts to a British general. After that, they eventually made their way over to America. Now days, Siamese cats are one of the most recognized of the breed. Siamese cats are without a doubt the most popular short haired cat and among the top 3 in the entire breed of cats.

Even though there are several different colors to this breed, some questions what makes a cat a true Siamese cat. These cats have always been known for their bodies which are lighter in color, with darker areas throughout. The more darker areas found on their bodies are normally around the feet, tail, legs, or face. They can weight anywhere between 6 - 16 lbs, with bright eyes that are normally slanted - which is another clue that the cat is a true Siamese.

Traditionally, Siamese cats are robust, with round heads and a truly muscular build. They are well known throughout the world for their color points and unique personalities. Unlike other breeds, Siamese breeds have a talent for communicating with people. If you are looking for a cat that is nice and quiet, you wouldn’t want a Siamese cat. These cats love to play, love to make noise, and they also happen to be the most social breed of cats out there.

Siamese cats demand a lot of attention, because in their minds, they believe that the world revolves around them. For this very reason, they can tend be quite dependant on their owners. They love to play, and crave interaction. If you leave them alone for too long, they won’t like it. They like to get attention, love to play, and hate to be left by themselves.

Even though Siamese cats are emotionally high maintenance, they don’t need a lot of maintenance They need a minimum amount of grooming, which involves bathing every once in a while, and brushing maybe once or twice a month. If you like cats with minimal maintenance, Siamese cats are perfect. Their hair is short to their skin, so a gentle brushing is all you need. They can get sick however, which is to be expected with any breed of cat.

Siamese cats have a life span that is similar to other breeds, which is normally around 15 - 20 years, sometimes even longer. As long as you feed him on a daily basis and take him to the vet for his regular checkups and shots, he will be around for years and years to come. Most people who have their Siamese cat for over 10 years, find the cat to be more like a child than a pet.

No matter how you look at it, a Siamese cat is a great pet. Although the Siamese breed does require a lot of attention, they are excellent pets that you can spend a lot of time with. They are great for kids as well, simply because kids can spend a lot of time with them. As long as you give your pet the attention he craves - he will be your life long friend for as long as you have him.

The Colorpoint Shorthair Cat

posted by Abby in January 20th, 2009

Omer Ashraf asked:

Similar to the Siamese except for the contrast in the color of markings, Colorpoint Shorthair is a pretty cat breed. The cat originated in the nineteen forties when breeders in United Kingdom and United States set out to develop a cat that resembled the Siamese in every aspect but had points in colors other than the traditional blue, chocolate, lilac and seal. For this purpose the Siamese at that time were crossed with Abyssinians, American Shorthairs and red colored Domestic Shorthairs to produce the ideal result. The new cats were somewhat different in appearance to the Colorpoint Shorthairs of today and were bred several times with the Siamese over the years to produce the elegant feline that we see now. In the early stages of their evolution, they were seen as a pollution of the Siamese gene pool by many cat fancies and breeders and even though they were given formal recognition in the sixties by Cat Fanciers' Association, they are still not recognized as a separate breed by most bodies in the United States and Europe and are considered a part of the Siamese.

A lithe and slender cat, the Colorpoint Shorthair has a tubular physique. Coat is short, shiny and looks stunning on its finely muscled body. A number of colors and patterns are recognized for the markings on ears, face, legs and tail, including cream, red, lynx, tabby and tortie variants. Rest of the body is usually in shades of cream and white. Head is triangular with big widely set years and almond shaped slanted blue eyes. Tail and legs are long. A finely built feline, the Colorpoint Shorthair weighs in the range of five to ten pounds.

Though healthy animals, Colorpoint Shorthairs share certain ailments with their ancestor Siamese in some of their lines. Amyloidosis of liver is one genetic condition afflicting them. Other is dilated cardiomyopathy even as the incidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is quite low in this breed. They also are prone to gum and tooth disorders and require periodic dental assessment.

Intelligent and active cats, Colorpoint Shorthairs are very lively and energetic. They spend the majority of their time playing with their toys and supervising household affairs.

Siamese Cats Are A Breed Apart

Michelle Bery asked:

Cats have long been one of man's most constant companions. In the past cats where often kept in houses where they served an invaluable role in controlling household pests. In contemporary times, cats continue to be a favored house pet due to their intelligence, low maintenance, and warm personalities. There are many popular breeds of cats, but Siamese cats are among the most recognizable and popular.

Siamese cats originated in Southeast Asia, although the exact origins of the breed are unknown. It was not until the twentieth century that Siamese cats became popular in western cultures. Today, Siamese cats are among the most popular breeds of cats in the world, and it is no wonder.

The appeal of Siamese cats begins with their stately and unique appearance. Their streamlined shape, striking facial features, almond shaped eyes, and contrasting colors give Siamese cats a distinctive look that is different from any other breed. But Siamese cats are more than just a pretty face; they are renowned for their personalities as well.

Siamese cats are considered to be among the most social and extroverted of all breeds. They are warm and affectionate and often bond strongly to their owners. Consequently, Siamese cats are less independent that other cats and enjoy the confines of home with their owners. Siamese cats are also known for their distinctively loud, low pitched voice.

Despite their high intelligence, Siamese cats are not necessarily easy to train. While some cats may heed your instructions from the very beginning, others may have a more inquisitive nature that leads them into mischief. However, it is rare that Siamese cats scratch furniture, and it is likely that they will prefer a carpet or scratching post to your precious sofa. But it is equally likely that you'll occasionally find your Siamese cat perched on top of your bookcases or even your refrigerator. You would be wise to keep any breakable items off the top shelf!

Siamese cats should always be purchased from a reputable breeder. Good breeders will ensure that your cat has pure bloodlines, proper inoculations, and have developed their physical and social abilities enough to make the adjustment to a new home and owner.

Siamese Cat Breed Guide and Health Issues

Moses Wright asked:

ats are renowned for their distinct coloring and blue eyes. Its refined coloring and poise appealed to many, and it was at its height of popularity in the 1950s. It is still a well-loved breed today, however, less attention is paid to it today compared to its heyday.

Almost everyone knows what a Siamese looks like as they are renowned. This is partially due to their popularity in the mystery film genre. People think that it is their inquisitive personality that makes them a complement to the role of a detective's sidekick.

Appearance - The distinctive characteristics of a Siamese cat are its long rectangular shaped body, a wedge shaped head, large ears, long and elegantly thin legs, a long graceful tail and brilliant blue, almond shaped eyes. The Siamese breed is a shorthaired cat and is available in several different colors and patterns such as Seal Point, Chocolate Point, Blue Point, or Lilac Point. Should there be different coloring, it is actually seen as a totally distinct breed; the Colorpoint Shorthair Breed.

Behavior and Characteristics - The Siamese is an affectionate cat who loves to have fun and expect the owners to be around most of the time. Siamese who tend to get into trouble are usually cats who are left too much to their own devices and have nothing interesting to do or they can be thinking of running away.

But if you are busy with your career yet still want a Siamese, an solution could be to have another kitten as well. This allows your Siamese not to be so lonely as well as having a partner in crime. But don't worry; they will both be ready and waiting to greet their owners at the door when they return home.

The Siamese is a very loyal cat to the family and is even willing to try and aid you in household chores or keep you company or even rest by your side as you unwind from a hectic day. Siamese cats are very outgoing and will meet and greet anyone who comes to the door. The older generation seem to have a fondness for the elegant and affectionate Siamese breed. A highly intelligent breed, the Siamese can be taught many tricks such as fetch and coming when their name is called.

But bear in mind that Siamese can be slightly melancholy at times and decide not to obey commands at times. In keeping with their playful nature, the Siamese breed are also known for making up their own games. Games that they adore consist of hide-and-seek as well as antics such as sudden, playful pounces on unwary family members.

If you love cats that are generous with their love and loyalty is a characteristic that you are looking out for, then the Siamese cat may be what you are looking for.
