will the kitten fatten up if i give it mammallac every day ? the kitten has some of its mothers milk but cant get much and the other kittens push him aside !!
Put the kitten alone with mom so it can get its share. Moms milk is always the best. The first days milk is especially important as it contains everything for the kits immunity. In almost all cases mom will have enough milk and if need be rotate out who eats first to make sure everyone gets a share. Formula’s are better than nothing but are never truly as good as what mom provides. Newborn kittens are skinny just like newborn humans, you can tell the kit is eating by his little round tummy.
Please don’t supplement unless you have to, improperly done kittens can aspirate on milk and end up with pneumonia.
If you have to supplement I would mix up no more than a couple ounces at a time and nurse each several times a day. This way each still gets some mothers milk. You can better judge the amount once you see how much it eats at a time, put only about a 1/2 oz in the bottle until you see it wants more. Dispose of anything left in the bottle don’t try to keep it for later the saliva breaks it down.
Refrigerate what ever is mixed up and make sure to warm it in a cup of warm water before feeding (fill bottle then sit in warm water). A cats body temp is slightly higher than a humans so it should feel very very slightly warm on your wrist. Cold milk causes stomach aches.
LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!
It hasn’t been long enough to worry about one being pushed aside. It can be completely normal for that to happen for the first day.
You will interupt the natural process of bonding which will do more harm than good to the baby.
The baby needs to nurse from the mama for the first few hours/days. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! The first milk the mama produces has important immune protection for the babies. If they miss it because you are bottle feeding, they will be sicker and weaker.
I can’t stress enough that this is completely normal and you need to leave them alone.
Stress and being watched is interfering with the mom’s care of the babies. You may CAUSE her to freak out and not care for them.
IF after AT LEAST 24 HOURS, the kitten still seems weak, THEN start with the bottle feeding.
Yes, it can go that long. You said he was nursing a little, that will keep him, newborns can go a little while without nursing strongly.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, just leave the room. Let mama and the babies settle in and do what comes naturally.
HI there, you have to be very very careful with this. firstly you must try your best to get this wee one to suckle from mum as there is nothing better than mums milk. The first few days of mums milk are the most important as it has important nutrients needed to build kittens immune system. If the kitten is suckling this is good news, what to do to be sure is, weigh the kit before he goes to mum and then again when he is finished. This will tell you whether he is feeding or not, and how much he is getting. If you want to substitute with some milk if baby isn’t getting enough, then once again, weigh the kitten and go by the instructions on the tin. It will tell you exactly how much milk per weight of kitten you can give. Follow the instructions and you can’t go wrong. Put the kitten straight back in with mum once you have fed him.
I cannot stress how careful you have to be with this, because if you do it wrong, the milk can go into babys lungs. I would use a small syringe and put it in the side of the kittens mouth and put just a small drop in the side at the back of the mouth, then there is less chance of him choking. If you see milk coming down his nose. STOP straight away.
As I say if mum can feed him that is the best way.
I wish you every luck with this, just be sensible and take care. Make sure you weigh him and you should be fine.
I hope this has helped you and good luck with your babies
