How to Give Your Cat a Bath

posted by Abby in November 30th, 2007

We all know that cats absolutely hate water, so why on earth would someone want to give their cat a bath?

cat bath Cats generally do not need to be bathed. Cats are very clean animals that do a marvelous job grooming themselves. However, there are times when it becomes necessary to get kitty in the tub.

For example, a couple summers ago, one of my cats developed ringworm. I had to use a special shampoo treatment on him to get rid of his condition. Cats can also get dirty or infested with fleas, just like dogs. There are times when there is on other option besides giving kitty a bath.

Keep in mind, unless you cat is used to it, bathing your cat is not easy. Be prepared for a bit of a struggle. It helps to have a partner hold down the cat while you bath him.

Before you begin bathing your cat, you will need to gather a few supplies. At the minimum, you will a pair of brand new kitchen gloves to protect your hands, two absorbent terry cloth towels, a pet safe shampoo, a pet safe conditioner, a sponge, and a sprayer attachment for your bath tub. If you don't have a sprayer attachment, you should have a pitcher or large cup that you can use to scoop clean water over your cat's body. Ideally, you should also have a non-skid mat to help your cat feel more secure.

Nutritional Needs of a Young Kitten

posted by Abby in November 28th, 2007

cute kitten So, you have a new kitten. You can't just dump any kind cat food in a bowl and get on with your life. There's a bit more to the process than this. To keep your kitten healthy, you have to be sure that you all of his nutritional needs are met.

For the first few weeks of his life, your kitten received all of his nutrition from his mother. When he reaches four to six weeks of age, you can start supplementing momma's milk with premium kitten food. I recommend everybody purchase cat food from their vet. Cat food found at a grocery store can be filled with filler and other non-nutritional ingredients.

By the time your kitten reached eight weeks of age, he will be weaned and eating a diet of kitten food. If you want, you can ask your vet and he can recommend an appropriate diet for the little guy.

If you want to change the kitten chow brand that your kitten is eating, you should still buy a small bag of the brand he is currently eating so that you can mix it with the new food. This way your kitten will be able to gradually adjust to the new food without upsetting his digestion.

Young kittens need to eat quite a bit of food. After all, they are growing incredibly fast from the age of eight weeks to about six months. This means that your cat will need to eat more than once a day. In fact, kittens under six months of age do best with four small meals a day, since they do not have very large stomachs, but need plenty of fuel. You should give your kitten an unlimited water supply.

Once your kitten reaches six months old, you can cut his feedings back to two to three meals a day. However, you should not change his food from kitten chow to adult food, yet. He is still a growing cat.

3 Things to Consider Before Adopting Your First Cat

posted by Abby in November 27th, 2007

Are You Ready to Buy a New Cat?

83055378_13c9766022_m So, you've decided that you want to adopt a cat. How wonderful! But before you start shopping for your first kitty, there are a few things you should consider. There's nothing worse than finding out that a cat is not for you or for your family once you've grown attached to your new found friend.

Here are three things to consider before buying or adopting a cat.

One of the main reasons why people have give up their pet cats is due to allergies. It sounds like common sense, but it is never a wise idea to bring a cat in the house when you or members of your family has cat allergies.

Cats are highly independent creatures. However, while cats require less interaction than dogs, she can still get lonely if left alone all day or is not given any attention. This can often lead to bad behavior from kitty. If for some reason you work long hours, you might want to consider getting a playmate for kitty. Two kitties will keep each other company during the time your not home.

Is your house big enough for a cat? Don't forget to that cats need litter boxes, food dishes, toys, and a scratching post. If you have children, the litter box will need to be placed in a place that your children can't get to, but that your cat can access easily.
